First Baptist Church of Lake Station
Location – Lake Station, Indiana
Project Synopsis
First Baptist Church of Lake Station wanted a major facelift. After our initial meeting and walk-through there were multiple interior areas that they targeted for the revamp. Upon further inspection we discovered they were also having some issues with the brick on the exterior of the wall (delamination from the surface). When discussing options for the exterior improvements, the church leaders wanted a specific look but also needed an economical solution. Our vertical wall spray fit both bills, a great alternative to conventional Stucco and E.I.F.S.
The Outside
After scaffolding was placed, exterior walls were resurfaced using 2” foam glued and fastened to exterior walls. Wide gaps between foam were filled. Total foam installation took 3 days. After foam was installed, SureCrete wall spray was installed through use of a Grayco spray machine. While wet, we installed fiberglass mesh into wet cement overlay, allowed to flash and then troweled to lock in place.
After material had flashed, the next coat of wall spray was installed and smooth troweled. Material was allowed to dry overnight and then finish “knockdown” look system was spray applied. Total installation of 3100 square feet took only 4 days. Typical E.I.F.S. and Stucco systems take 8-12 days. After wall system had cured, seams around windows were caulked and exterior finish was painted with an exterior grade latex paint.
The Inside
A number of our floor systems were used to achieve the various looks and textures desired when the project went “inside”. The kitchen, stairs and breezeway have our crème blend quartz system for it’s slip resistant characteristics. We installed a hybrid chip system in the Foyer for its overall durability and aesthetics. The Fellowship Hall had the greatest decorative need. The team decided on a cementitious overlay installation, eco stained and top-coated. This thicker system was chosen for this area because of the rough shape and unevenness of the existing floor.
The Fellowship Hall and kitchen had two layers of tile that needed to be removed. The foyer area had carpet that was to be removed and recessed walk off areas that need to be filled prior to coating. Exterior had Brick over concrete block wall that needed to be removed. We looked at multiple ways to reduce cost and together settled on most of the demo work and removal of tile being done by the congregation. Associate Pastor Bill Meyer pitched in and oversaw this part of the project.
